Chicken Boy by
Mrs. R.
I loved "Chicken Boy" by Frances O'Roark Dowell. Tobin and his only friend, Henry, raise chickens as a science fair project. Tobin wants the extra credit his teacher is offering, but Henry is out to prove that chickens have souls. By caring for the chickens on a daily basis, Tobin learns to deal with his dysfunctional family; a dad who doesn't pay attention to anyone but himself, a sister and brothers who can only concentrate on their own survival, and Granny who blames Tobin's dad for her daughter's death a few years before. The chickens teach Tobin quite a lot about how life, death and grief. And Tobin keeps his sense of humor even in the toughest times! Great story!
